adventure to space

Students at Cesar Chavez Elementary School in Oklahoma City took a week-long Adventure to Space through an interactive educational program. The Adventure began Monday, Oct. 10th when the gymnasium at the school was transformed into a NASA® Training Center with the help of educators from the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The students in grades 3rd-6th gained hands-on learning as they worked together to build a space shuttle, mission control and a space station module. At the end of the week, they became astronauts and NASA® personnel for a scripted mission. The Adventure to Space includes interactive lessons and instructional units on rocket building, living and working in space, astronomy, and space history, all of which are correlated to national math, science, language arts and social studies standards. The students launched water bottle rockets as shown in the video above. The program -- sponsored by OG&E, Science Museum Oklahoma, and the School of Media and Strategic Communications at Oklahoma State University -- is designed to increase children's interest in math & science through hands-on activities and learning.
